While it’s safe to say that we’re all suckers for a “Best of..” list, I think it’s also fair to declare that there are more than enough of them getting snared in the daily cast of your internets. So rather than focus on the music of 2007, we’re going to take a moment for future time and look at what we can anticipate in 2008.
CONFIRMED:
The Gutter Twins
Saturnalia
When we think about the long awaited release by The Gutter Twins finally happening next year, it’s hard to quell the anticipation long enough to focus on anything else.
The collaboration between Greg Dulli ( The Afghan Whigs, The Twilight Singers) and Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) had been nothing more than rumor for some time. Then came word of an official album release and the clouds did part, shining light on the only album coming out next year that will cause cirrhosis of the liver. Look for Saturnaila to drop in early March.
The Mars Volta
The Bedlam in Goliath
Possibly the most creative (certainly the most eccentric) band currently producing music returns January 29th. The Mars Volta release The Bedlam in Goliath upon the all too suspecting masses as their fourth studio album.
Most people’s impression of the band is limited to their single “The Widow” off their second album Frances the Mute. And while no one can blame anybody for giving the album a listen then passing afterward on a band that seemingly refuses to be described as “easily digestible”, The Mars Volta is (slowly) becoming just that. Their third release Amputechture portrayed a more focused sound and was chaotic at all the right moments instead of being erratic for erraticism’s sake (as what seemed to be the case with Frances..). What we’ve heard from The Bedlam in Goliath seems to follow this same creative rationale. Don’t think that we won’t be picking this one up the minute it falls.
Del The Funky Homosapien
Eleventh Hour
By the time Del’s new album hits (Feb. 26th) it will have been eight years since his last solo effort as the Funky Homosapien. But he has been far from absent since then, having worked on the Deltron 3030 project (with Dan the Automator and Kid Koala) and most recently with the Gorillaz. Going with Definitive Jux records instead of Hieroglyphics records (which he helped found) seemed to be a strange decision but who are we to question the wisdom of Deltron Zero? Nobody, that’s who. Now take a hay-minute for some Del..
Mindless Self Indulgence
If
What can we say? There’s no accounting for taste? Maybe but even if it somehow takes our ill-perceived level of sophistication down 13 steps, we can’t help but proclaim our love for Mindless Self Indulgence.
Ever since we heard their cover of Method Man’s “Bring the Pain” way back in ‘99 we’ve been chasing these crazy kids as they rocket themselves across the musical galaxy on a punk fueled electric keyboard of mayhem. How can you not love a band so completely vulgar and out of control? How can you not love a band so intent on pissing people off that they illegitimately categorize their last album as “Christian” on iTunes? We’re tellin’ ya, they’re the last of a dying breed my friends and that breed is punk (yes I said it). Look for their next one in April.
RUMORED:
Mouth of the Architect
After breaking up for an entire week, the men in Mouth of the Architect have revisited the great American dream known as professional musicianship. Three incredible demo tracks recently submerged on their MySpace page and a new full length album is assumed to be forthcoming.
The White Stripes and Bob Dylan
Yeah, you read that right. Numerous sources are reporting that, after many collaborations (on stage and in studio during Hank Williams III latest recording), Dylan and the Stripes are preparing to cut some tracks together. Official confirmation has yet to be obtained but that’s why this one is in the “rumored” section.
Portishead
If audiobomb had been around for the last ten years, we would have reported each of those years that a new Portishead album was forthcoming. HOWEVER, 2008 seems like it could finally be the year. Pitchfork reported back in November that the album is due out in April and, since then, the band has become more extroverted. Again, we’re holding our breath.
Is there a band you’re anxiously waiting for that we forgot to mention? Hit us up in the comments section.
